You do not need a private network to avoid most of these problems. FMCSA publishes the key facts for free:

1. Operating authority. Confirm the carrier's USDOT and MC numbers are real, active and match the legal name you are dealing with.
2. Insurance on file. Check that a liability filing is on record, then ask for a certificate of insurance that names your brokerage.
3. Safety record. Review crashes, inspections and out-of-service rates.
4. Identity. Call the phone number on the FMCSA record, not the one in the message asking you to book.
